Managing
juniper foliage
“The finished tree has
restful areas of negative space
and a graceful rhythm”
Remove fruit
to divert energy
into foliage
Junipers gain strength from
active, healthy foliage; if this is
dramatically reduced, the shock
induces undesirable needlelike
juvenile growth. Never remove
more than 40 percent of foliage
at one time, and ensure that the
remaining foliage has active,
light green growing tips.
Increase adventitious
budding by pruning a
terminal growth tip only
if there are several
more behind it that
will race to take
its place as the
terminal bud.
Clean out internal foliage with no
active tips, often due to flowering
in the past. Removing them and
pruning the terminal tip will
stimulate adventitious growth.
