Making a twin-
trunk bonsai
Twin-trunk bonsai are inspired by
multistemmed trees that occur naturally,
perhaps when seeds germinate close
together and merge to form
one base. Use this simple
technique to create your own
twin- or triple-trunk designs.
Choosing your material
Twin trunks are often described as parent–child
combinations: the parent tree shelters the child
as it grows up, out, and away.
∙Use cuttings from the same tree to ensure
identical features, such as leaf type and the
timing of bud break.
∙Aim to choose a straight, slightly larger,
thicker, older-looking “parent” trunk, and
