Creating a forest The project aim
Atmospheric forests are created by planting
several individual trees together in the same pot.
The tradition calls for odd numbers and for all the
trees to be of the same species, but Japanese
examples of multispecies forests do exist.
Choosing your material
In forest plantings A huge range of coniferous and
straight trunks are
easier to deal with deciduous trees can be grown in the
than those with forest style. Popular choices include
strong movement
maple, stewartia, hornbeam, Hinoki
cypress, pine, cedar, and larch—all
of which naturally tend to grow in
forests. Look for straight trunks of
various sizes, and trees that have been
root pruned at an early age to make
them suitable for bonsai. There is no
limit on the number of trees you can
use, but displays of more than about
30 start to appear far too crowded.
∙Imagine the forest has self-sown.
Start with one main tree, then some
slightly smaller and thinner trees,
then double the number of even
smaller and thinner “offspring.”
∙Choose a tree with small leaves and
compact branching over one with
coarse leaves and growth.
