vember, bonsai collectors and profes-
sionals converge on the city of Kyoto for
the Taikan-tenjikai which translates to
EGrandview Bonsai Exhibition. The event
has been running since 1980 and is considered
the second best exhibition after the Kokufu-ten
in Tokyo. There are a number of reasons I prefer
this event over the National Exhibition. Many of
these will be explained in detail below with a bit
of “proof” in the form of photos.
While apprenticing in Japan at Fujikawa Kouka-
en in Osaka, I’ve had the privilege to attend three
Taikan-ten events. Each year, it’s a mad dash to
prepare bonsai for the vendor area and during the
event maintain the exhibits. While challenging,
the experience is always worth the effort as the
diversity of species and styles at this event never
fails to impress. Unlike the Kokufu-ten which
has the equivalent of breed standards like the
