Where trees get their energy
Leaves use sunlight to
help convert carbon oxygen is released
dioxide and water into by the leaves into
energy-giving the atmosphere
sugars through
photosynthesis
The energy (sugar) is
converted and used by
the tree to fuel growth
The leaves convert the sugar into starch
and store it until it is needed in the fall A network of branches transports
water and nutrients to the leaves
Carbon dioxide and
waste products are
returned to the soil
via the roots Roots store energy
(starch) for the tree
over the winter
Well-developed root system
mirrors the structure of Oxygen, water, and
branches in the tree canopy minerals are absorbed
from surrounding soil
Tree roots extend deep into
the ground to anchor it
