Refining a The finished tree
windswept pine
Sometimes subtle changes to a styled tree can result in
a much improved bonsai. Commercial growers in Japan
and China are adept at creating semi-styled material that
is waiting for someone to put their mark on it; even small
changes can take a tree to a much higher level.
Choosing suitable trees
Commercially-grown material
often follows a pattern, so a
nursery may have several
similar semi-styled trees.
∙Look for obvious possibilities.
This imported Zuisho white
pine has dynamic movement
in its slanting trunk, with
branches growing to one side
—a windswept style, perhaps?
∙Look for characterful features.
On this tree the lower branch
is very interesting, sweeping
below the dense canopy.
∙Consider the type. Here the
compact growth, ability to
back bud, and the small
needle size are ideal for
a small to medium tree.
