The Imperial Pine is repotted every five or six years in order to allow room
for its feeder roots to grow. Some people have the misconception that bonsai
remain small because they are pot-bound. When a bonsai is repotted, about one-
third of the roots and soil are removed before it is returned to the same pot with
new soil. Because the tree is tied down and watered, it does not need anchor
roots but it does need feeder roots. Repotting allows it to continually generate
new feeder roots. As a side note, many trees are naturally shallow-rooted no
matter what size they are above ground. They breathe and get moisture from
their roots. Generally, 80 per cent of their roots are in the top 18 inches of soil
around them.
High school art students find inspiration in the Museum’s Tropical Conservatory during the winter
months, especially in the blooming Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea glabra), in training since 1985.
