northwestern California, an area where Coast Redwoods (Sequoia
sempervirens), some of the world’s tallest trees, are found.
After John Naka’s passing, Harry Hirao played the role of “resident
expert” at the museum, making regular visits to ensure that the bonsai
were properly cared for. His own love for bonsai and viewing stones
was so strong it was mentioned in his eulogy when the Buddhist priest
cited a sutra and said “Mountains, rivers, grass and trees, all attain
enlightenment, [which means that] to an enlightened person a rock is
not just a rock, a tree is not just a tree.... An enlightened person can
see the innate Buddha nature in all things.”
Harry Hirao was happy to be reunited with one of his California Junipers (Juniperus
californica) in the North American Collection of the Museum.
Harry gives a demonstration during the annual spring Bonsai Festival of how to use wire in
training a bonsai.
