Well, this is the story of how the Bicentennial bonsai collection came to
America. The drama continues to the present day under the direction of more
recent National Arboretum directors and the wonderful leadership and financial
support of the National Bonsai Foundation.
Bob Drechsler continued to care for his charges in a most dedicated fashion
until his retirement in 1996. It is indicative of Bob’s sensitivity for the bonsai
collection that he considered his main objective throughout his career to
maintain the integrity of each tree as originally styled. He kept a small notebook
with a sketch of each tree. This reference became “dog eared” from constant
referral by the time he retired.
What began as a modest idea for having a small collection of bonsai at the
National Arboretum has resulted in the creation of the National Bonsai &
Penjing Museum, with over 150 masterpiece bonsai and penjing in Japanese,
Chinese and American collections. Without question, the Bicentennial gift of
Japanese bonsai has been the most important role played by plants in furthering
the diplomatic relationship between Japan and the United States since the
presentation of the flowering cherries at the beginning of the twentieth century.
This gift has helped turn the art of bonsai from a mainly Japanese tradition into
an international activity with bonsai artists throughout the world.
I am sure that many of these miniature trees in the Japanese Collection will
be living witnesses to the enduring friendship between the United States and
Japan during the next Centennial celebration at the National Arboretum.
