competitions.  Some  exhibits  highlight  the  changing  seasons  as  seen  in  spring

               blooms, fall foliage and winter silhouettes. At other times, if a bonsai is simply
               looking  great  it  is  put  on  formal  display  in  the  tokonoma  accompanied  by  an
               appropriate  painted  scroll  from  the  museum’s  collection.  The  Toringo  Crab
               Apple (Malus toringo) is popular because it is interesting all year long. It has a
               dynamic curved trunk with white blossoms in the spring, bright green leaves in
               the summer, yellow fruit in the fall and a jagged silhouette in the winter. On
               occasion, exhibits take their themes from the wider world, such as the “Year of
               the Rabbit” exhibit inspired by the 2011 Lunar New Year.


















































               Bonsai  are  on  view  year  round  in  the  open-air  pavilions,  then  are  brought  together  in  special
               thematic  exhibitions  several  times  a  year.  These  are  installed  in  the  indoor  Special  Exhibits
               Gallery and feature posters like the sampling on this page.
                    Viewing stones are often displayed with other Asian art objects to give them
               a  context  for  an  American  audience.  Chinese  scholars’  rocks  with  their
               distinctive irregular outlines and deep crevices are featured, as are stones from
